Why Choose Standard Block Paving Sealer?

  • Strong formula - our low viscosity polyurethane resin is designed to penetrate the jointing sand of block paving to form an elastomeric joint, minimising the growth of moss and weeds between paving slabs.
  • In addition to stabilising joints, our Standard Block Paving Sealer protects the paving whilst enhancing its appearance and creating an easier substrate to clean and keep free from oil, fuels and stains.
  • Quick to apply - cures and seals concrete block paving in one application.
  • UV light resistant, and weather resistant - unaffected by ice, water and most common chemicals.
  • Suitable for - domestic driveways, patios and low to medium traffic commercial areas.
  • Dries to a sheen finish.

Block Paving Sealer Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why should I choose this product when there are cheaper alternatives on the market?
A. Our block paving sealer is a professional standard product. It is superior in quality over the vast majority of domestic alternatives. Our customers are extremely satisfied with the results they have had with our block paving sealer, and you can find excellent reviews of this product on our TrustPilot page.

Q. If there is a break in applying, does it dry to a different shade being applied at different times? Can you see the break?
A. If the application is interrupted there may be a risk of a slight difference in colour. A single continuous application is always preferable.

Q. Does the product affect any slip properties of the substrate, e.g tiles with a rough surface?
A. The sealer penetrates the surface leaving only a minimal coating on the surface, so therefore the slip potential should not be greatly affected.

Q. If applied using a hand pump, will the product damage the O Rings?
A. The material is solvent borne, therefore if the equipment is not solvent resistant then yes this will damage the seals.

Q. If someone reuses a container that has previously had weed killer in then thoroughly cleaned and dried it, would there be a reaction if they then put the block paving sealer in?
A. If the material comes into contact with any water or moisture then there could be a reaction producing a detrimental effect upon the applied material.

Q. Is the block paving sealer polyurethane or acrylic based?
A. The Standard Block Paving Sealer is acrylic based.

Q. Will the sealer whiten with moisture either from above or below?
A. If the application instructions are followed thoroughly, there should be no whitening. This will be at risk of occurring only when material is either put on a damp surface or it rains before the material has dried.

Q. Does this product react with rollers and plastic trays used to apply it?
A. Rollers and plastic trays should be fine as they are usually made of materials with some solvent resistance.

Q. Can the sealer be decanted into a smaller vessel? Will an ordinary plastic syphon cope with the decanting or will it dissolve?
A. The syphon and new vessel would have to be made of solvent resistant material. Another option could be to use a funnel made of metal or solvent resistant material, and decant that way. Any decanting should always be performed in a well ventilated area.

Q. Can it be applied to a natural stone patio?
A. It is suitable for most domestic patios. We recommend you test on a small area before a full application if you aren't sure.

Q. My driveway is concrete with an imprinted block paving pattern imprinted in it. Is this still ok to use on this substrate?
A. Although it should be fine, we always recommend patch testing first to be on the safe side.

Q. Does the sealer allow water to drain/penetrate?
A. Once treated, the paving will resist water ingress but the resin is permeable to water vapour so some "breathing" of the paving will occur, however this is not a notable feature of this material.

Q. How long before it needs reapplying?
A. The lifetime of the coating would be expected to exceed 2 years, however the exact lifetime will be dependant upon the amount of wear/trafficking and the porosity of the substrate.

How to Apply

  • Standard Block Paving Sealer is applied using either a fine rose watering can or a low-pressure horticultural type sprayer. Our Block Paving Squeegee is also recommended. We would recommend using a soft brush or roller if spraying is not desirable. Application should not be made when rain is expected, as this can cause discolouration whilst the sealer remains wet.

Preparation - New Installations

  • Blocks should be visibly dry in appearance. Do not apply when rain is expected. The jointing sand should also be dry although a small amount of dampness can be tolerated. The jointing sand should be well compacted and slightly below the pavement level as to avoid sand being plucked out and deposited on the surface.

Preparation - Existing Installations

  • Paving should be cleaned by water blasting, grit blasting or steam cleaning. The surface should then be allowed to dry before re-sanding and compacting the joints. It is preferable that, before sealing, the jointing sand is also dry. Do not apply when rain is expected.

Application

  • A liberal amount of Standard Block Paving Sealer should be applied to the surface using either a watering can with a fine hose or a low-pressure horticultural type sprayer.

  • Using our Block Paving Squeegee, push any excess sealer off the top of the paving and into the joints.

  • Attention should be paid to ensure sufficient material penetrates the joint to achieve stabilisation without leaving an excess of Standard Block Paving Sealer on the surface of the block.

  • Drying time at 20°C: 1-2 hours. The drying rate will be greatly affected by wind, humidity, application method, coverage rate/surface porosity, as well as surface and ambient temperatures.

  • Empty tins can be disposed of in builders' skips. If any material remains in the tin, it should be treated as chemical waste in accordance with section 13 of the Mechanical Data Sheet (Specifications tab).

  • Fibregrid standard block paving sealer does not have a specified minimum application temperature, however the sealer contains an organic solvent which needs to evaporate in order for the sealer to dry. Therefore the lower the temperature, the longer the drying time will be.
