There are approximately 1 million blind and partially sighted adults in the United Kingdom. Approximately 5% of these people have no sight at all. When moving around the pedestrian environment, visually impaired people will actively seek and make use of tactile information underfoot, particularly detectable floor indicators used in tactile paving.

Our polyurethane (PU) tactile indicator paving is available for Highways (Controlled and Uncontrolled Crossing Points), Rail and LRT areas (Platforms Edge Warning Surface) and the Built Environment (Hazard Warnings Corduroy Surface)

Adhesive is included and will apply up to 10 tiles.

All panels sizes are 400mm x 400mm.

Ensure that the areas that are to have Tactile Flooring fitted are clean and dry and free from loose and friable material. Any “dished” or damaged surface areas should be patch repaired to provide a reasonably flat and consistent surface.

Dry fit all Tactile Flooring tiles to ensure that they fit freely and that they sit flat down on to the surface. If required, the tiles can be trimmed on site to suit using an industrial jigsaw and appropriate cutting blades (Bosch “T101 A1F” or similar are ideal).

Please ensure that goggles and gloves are worn at all times when any form of cutting is involved.

When mixing the adhesive, add the liquid hardener to the base material and mix thoroughly using an electric drill fitted with a mixing paddle paying particular attention to the edges and base of the tub. NOTE mixing by hand with a stick will not achieve the consolidation required.

Once mixed the adhesive will start to cure in the tub within a few minutes by removing mix from the tub and spreading over the work site a longer working time can be achieved. [depending on ambient temperature this could be between 30 minutes to 2 hours].

Fitting the tile

These Tactile Paving Tiles adhere to most standard surfaces, asphalt, wood, concrete, steel and ceramic with no surface excavation required.

The tiles are easily cut to follow the kerb line or to accommodate ramps and manhole covers. They deform over cambered curved areas. A typical installation to both sides of the controlled crossing can be completed in less than 2 hours – with added advantage of reducing disruption to pedestrians. This tactile surface system can be laid on both concrete and tarmac surfaces using either standard adhesive or the unique moisture tolerant system.

  1. Begin by laying the tiles in the required format and position on site.

  2. Apply the mixed adhesive to the prepared surface using a serrated float, keeping within the duck tape boundary but tight to all edges. A standard pack of adhesive contains 3.5 litres [equal to 2.2mm @ 1.6 m² - [1 standard box of tiles].

  3. Apply tiles to adhesive by slightly rolling from one edge making sure that no air is trapped beneath. Use a wheel/roller working from the centre of the tile out. Press gently over the entire surface to thoroughly bed in the tile paying particular attention to corners and edges.

  4. To finish the joints, kiln dried sand, the same colour as the tiles can be applied while the adhesive is still wet and swept off when full curing has occurred. To remove any excess adhesive allow to skin over then remove with a scraper. A small amount of white spirit can then be used to wipe away any residue. Duct tape should be removed once the adhesive has started to skin over.

The provided Epoxy Adhesive MUST be used with the all tactile paving tiles.

Controlled and Uncontrolled Crossing Tactile

The purpose of the blister surface is to provide a warning to visually impaired people who would otherwise, in the absence of a kerb upstand, find it difficult to differentiate between where the footway ends and the carriageway begins. The surface is therefore an essential safety feature for this group of road users at pedestrian crossing points. Red should be used at Controlled Crossings Only and Stone should be used at Uncontrolled Crossings Only.

Controlled Applications (On-street) Applications, Zebras – Pelicans – Puffins – Toucans – Traffic signals with pedestrian phases.

Uncontrolled Applications (On-street) Side road crossings – Busy crossovers (vehicle crossings) – Crossings away from junctions – Kerb to kerb flat road humps – Signal controlled junctions without pedestrian phases (traffic lights)

Corduroy Tactile

The purpose of the corduroy surface is to warn visually impaired people of the presence of hazards, such as stairs, level crossings or the approach to on-street light rapid transit (LRT) platforms. Consisting of rows of parallel half-round bars, it conveys the message “hazard, proceed with caution”.

Application Tops and bottom of stairs – Foot of a ramp to an on-street rapid transit (LRT) platform, but not at any other ramps – Level crossing – Where a footway/footpath joins a shared route.

Rail Platform Edge Tactile

This design has flat topped domes set in evenly spaced rows parallel to the direction of travel along the platform. The offset of the domes indicates the direction of travel to the train. Used adjacent to safe carriageway crossings, the surface can be any colour other than red, but should provide a good contrast with the surrounding area to assist partially sighted people.

Must be applied with Epoxy Adhesive.

LRT Platform Edge Tactile

The purpose of the on-street surface is to raise awareness for visually impaired people that are nearing the edge of an on-street LRT platform. The profile of this warning surface consists of rows of ‘Lozenge’ shapes.
